Forming and Updating Implicit Impressions of Robot Competence

چکیده
Given the importance of setting accurate expectations of robot capabilities in humans, we explore how people form implicit judgments toward a robot over a prolonged interaction. In our study, we created a live interaction between a robot deli cashier and a human customer. The robot displays a competent behavior followed by another competent behavior (Condition A), an incompetent behavior (Condition B), or an incompetent behavior with a warning (Condition C). We measured implicit judgments of competence toward the robot using an affect misattribution procedure over time and by condition. Contrary to what many studies on implicit updating predict, results show that participants updated implicit impressions of competence over time with minimal pieces of information. However, we found no significant effect of warnings on guarding against a drop in competence judgments.

An Exploration of Implicit Attitudes Towards Robots Using Implicit Measures
Given the importance of setting accurate expectations of robot capabilities in humans, we explore how people form implicit competence judgments toward a robot over a prolonged interaction, and how durable those implicit judgments are. We created a live interaction between a robot deli cashier and a human customer. The robot displays a competent behavior followed by: another competent behavior (...
متن کاملThe neural dynamics of updating person impressions.
Person perception is a dynamic, evolving process. Because other people are an endless source of social information, people need to update their impressions of others based upon new information. We devised an fMRI study to identify brain regions involved in updating impressions. Participants saw faces paired with valenced behavioral information and were asked to form impressions of these individ...
متن کاملInterfering with activity in the dorsomedial prefrontal cortex via TMS affects social impressions updating.
In our everyday social interactions we often need to deal with others' unpredictable behaviors. Integrating unexpected information in a consistent representation of another agent is a cognitively demanding process. Several neuroimaging studies point to the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) as a critical structure in mediating social evaluations. Our aim here was to shed light on the possible caus...
متن کاملNeuro-Optimizer: A New Artificial Intelligent Optimization Tool and Its Application for Robot Optimal Controller Design
The main objective of this paper is to introduce a new intelligent optimization technique that uses a predictioncorrectionstrategy supported by a recurrent neural network for finding a near optimal solution of a givenobjective function. Recently there have been attempts for using artificial neural networks (ANNs) in optimizationproblems and some types of ANNs such as Hopfield network and Boltzm...
متن کاملA Second Chance to Make a First Impression? How Appearance and Nonverbal Behavior Affect Perceived Warmth and Competence of Virtual Agents over Time
First impressions of others are fundamental for the further development of a relationship and are thus of major importance for the design of virtual agents, too. We addressed the question whether there is a second chance for first impressions with regard to the major dimensions of social cognition–warmth and competence. We employed a novel experimental set-up that combined agent appearance (rob...
